“Newsies” News Unveils
By Alissa Slater
It is the time of the school year every theatre student looks forward to most: musical season. This year Lakeview High School will be putting on the “Newsies” airing March 12-14 with the possibility of an encore performance on March 15.
“Newsies” will take viewers back in time to the 1899 newsboy strike in New York City. Homeless paperboy, Jack Kelley, befriends newcomers David and Les Jacobs. The boys band together to form a union of fellow workers and work to fight Robert Pulitzer for fair wages. It is full of intricate dance numbers which will be choreographed by Mrs. DeGraaff, catchy tunes directed by Mrs. Straud and talented students bringing the stage alive.
The audition process for this musical was no easy task for stage director, Mrs. Baun, or producer, Mrs. Williams, either. Former Middle School musical director, Mrs. Figley, also participated as a guest judge for auditions. The four day process consisted of dance camp, where students were taught a group dance number to memorize. This number was later performed during dance auditions. Cold reads and vocal auditions also took place for the 45 eager, young actors in addition to callbacks following the entire try-out process.
