Chincoteague Bay Field Station

After completing an intensive, five-month study of marine ecosystems, Lakeview’s gifted 6th grade students have the opportunity to participate in an overnight educational field experience at the Chincoteague Bay Field Station in Virginia. This immersive trip allows students to extend their classroom learning through hands-on, inquiry-based science as they explore the unique ecosystems of the Delmarva Peninsula. Prior to the trip, students prepare by studying the animals, plants, and environmental concepts they will encounter during the experience. While at the field station, students take part in authentic scientific investigations including shark or squid dissections, laboratory experiments, saltwater testing, and field studies examining salt marsh biodiversity, sand dune ecology, and the intertidal zone. The Chincoteague Bay Field Station experience provides students with a deeper understanding of marine science while fostering curiosity, independence, collaboration, and a lasting appreciation for environmental stewardship.
