First LEGO League
Lakeview students have participated in this competition to learn programming, design, research and presentation skills for over a decade. Students compete in the First LEGO League Tournament Northwest Pennsylvania Championship which is held on the Penn State Behrend Campus.
This year, the theme for the FIRST® LEGO® League robotics competition is BIOGLOW™, a challenge centered on biodiversity and the important connections among living organisms, ecosystems, and the environment. Students are challenged to investigate a real-world problem related to biodiversity and develop an innovative solution.
Our team has chosen to focus specifically on biodiversity in rainforest ecosystems. To strengthen their understanding, the team visited the Buffalo Zoo, where they participated in a private educational program about rainforest animals and biodiversity, explored the zoo’s rainforest habitat, and spoke with zoo staff about challenges that threaten biodiversity. Using what they learned, the students are researching how technology and robotics could be used to collect information, identify threats, and help scientists protect vulnerable ecosystems.
In addition to developing and presenting their Innovation Project, students will design, build, and program a LEGO® robot to autonomously complete a variety of missions on the competition field. Throughout the season, they will apply engineering, coding, research, problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, and FIRST Core Values.
This year’s FIRST LEGO League competition will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2026.
