Elementary Core Curriculum

Mathematics
The elementary math program focuses on developing basic skills and fundamental mathematical understanding over time. Students are taught these concepts through a “spiraling” sequence so they develop mastery over time. Students participate in many different math activities and hands-on games individually, with a partner, in small groups and as a whole class.

English Language Arts
A balanced literacy approach provides each student with rich experiences in reading, writing, listening, speaking, phonics, word study and grammar, with a large portion of the language arts block dedicated to guided reading. Leveled readers are used during guided reading instruction to differentiate instruction so that all children read on their appropriate reading level. This approach provides the opportunity to accelerate children to the next reading level as soon as they demonstrate mastery. Writing is emphasized at each grade level using the 6+1 Traits of writing — developing ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, voice, conventions and presentation. Students use these traits as they progress and are exposed to different genres of writing as they progress through our system.

Students work cooperatively to build analytical skills such as observing, recording data, categorizing, creating journals, and communicating results.
