Middle School Curriculum
Middle School Curriculum Overview
The exploratory curriculum emphasizes the development of the whole child providing opportunities for students to explore new concepts, create meaningful connections and collaborate with other students and teachers to experience relevant learning.
Classes are designed to provide students with exposure to other high interest learning. Exploratory classes may include Family Consumer Science, art, library-research, general music and technology education. At some point in their middle school career, all students will have exposure to all of these exploratory classes. Students are also afforded the opportunity to participate in performing arts courses: chorus and band (instrumental music). Many students choose more than one and are encouraged to do so. All students participate in Physical Education and Health instruction during this critical and impressionable period of growth.
The Lakeview Middle School provides a variety of instruction to meet the ever-changing needs of adolescent learners. The focus is on meeting the needs of students, one child at a time. The advanced classes provide differentiation for high-end learners while academic level courses meet the needs of the majority of middle school students.
Specialized skills level classes also are available for more intense study with students requiring special interventions in reading and mathematics. The varied needs of middle school students require flexible, engaging academic learning environment. Highly qualified and capable, caring teachers deliver excellent instruction in an exceptionally nurturing environment. All Lakeview Middle School students benefit from appropriately challenging, rigorous classroom experiences. We meet the needs of students with special needs as well as those who need acceleration to ensure learning success.
Teacher Teams:
Teams of teachers serve each grade level. The teams meet regularly to discuss curriculum, instruction, team activities and ways of supporting students. The teams take a highly personal approach to knowing every child individually, and this collaboration is key to developing a supportive, caring environment for all students.
All students receive high-quality instruction in language arts and writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Additionally, all students participate in world language as part of their unified block. Lakeview strives to provide students an enriching middle school experience.
Algebra I and Pre Algebra
At Lakeview students take placement test to assist in course placement for mathematics. This provides students the opportunity to enter Algebra I prior to 9th grade. These students take both the PSSA and Keystone as Algebra is coded as a high school course. The goal of placement testing is to be inclusionary, not exclusionary. It is designed to provide access to high quality curriculum and learning experiences, not to put students on an exclusionary track.
