Brenda “Bindas” Gander
The 1989 Lakeview Log yearbook summed it up best when it posted “After an overall dual record of six wins and one loss the 1988 Girls Track team kept the winning tradition alive by placing first in their league”. A big part of that continued success came from Brenda “Bindas” Gander.
Brenda qualified and competed in the high jump at States 4 times in her high school career. In 1986 she received a 7th place finish with a jump of 5 feet 2 inches, In 1987 she finished 3rd with a jump of 5 feet 4 inches, In 1988 she finished in 2nd with a jump of 5 feet 6 inches and in 1989 she finished in First Place with a jump of 5 feet 8 inches.
Brenda was District 10 Champion in the high jump in 1987, 1988 and again in 1989. In addition, she still holds the school record for high jump at 5’8”. In her senior year, Brenda was ranked in the top 50 female athletes in the high jump by Track & Field magazine.
As a track team member, Brenda was part of a group of athletes who ran the 4x100 relay at the 1989 state meet. In addition to the 4x100 event, Brenda ran hurdles and participated in the long jump. She held the school long jump record (16’2”) up to 2009 when it was broken by Fawn Miller.
Brenda led her team in points scored for 3 straight years, 1987-1989, and was named the 1989 Team Most Valuable Player for Track. In addition to her track interests, Brenda also participated in the cheerleading program and returned to her almamater as a member of the Lakeview High School Track Team coaching staff for a number of years.
John GuytonJohn Guyton was one of the top basketball stars ever produced at Lakeview High School where he was a dominating force on the hardwood.
From 1969-1972, Guyton made his mark as a prolific scorer and all-round basketball standout. He was named to the Mercer County Class B league first-team all-stars his junior year and as a senior in 1972 he was named the league’s most valuable player.
He scored 1,013 career points for the Sailors and was the leading scorer in the county his senior year, averaging 23.7 points and a phenomenal 24.5 rebounds per game.
At the prestigious Hoyle Tournament in 1972, he was the Hoyle Award winner and was named a second-team all-star.
John also participated in track and field while a student at Lakeview. John went on to play basketball at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year starter and team captain his junior and senior years. He scored 1,198 career points at IUP, and pulled down 630 rebounds. He had a single season field-goal percentage of 61.6 and a career mark of 53.7 percent and was the leader in personal fouls.
John was named to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Western Division first team as a sophomore and senior, earning second team honors as a junior. His senior year he was named second team All-District. He was named to the IUP First Team for the years 1956-1976.
John continued to play hoops with the Indiana Athletic Club team and in a local recreation leagues for several years. He also coached and umpired Little League and coached youth soccer.Tom Tingley
Tom Tingley, from the Class of 85’, was a 3 sport standout during his tenure at Lakeview High School. In football, Tom was a 2 year varsity starter and a member of the school’s first conference championship team – 1982 French Creek Valley Conference (FCVC) champions. In track, Tom was a 3 year Varsity letter winner and a district qualifier.
Tom’s first love was Lakeview Wrestling. During his 4 year tenure on the mat Tom compiled some amazing accolades. A 4 year varsity letter winner, 3 time section champion, District 10 runner-up and District 10 champion, Northwest region champion, and State Championship qualifier. 116 career wins. First team All Conference, First Team All-District. A member of the 1982-83 and 1984-85 FCVC Championship teams. Team captain during his senior year (1984-85).
The Sailors appreciated the various contributions Tom made to the Lakeview program; Tom held the record for 2 and 3-point nearfalls in a season with 16 & 29, set a school record for most wins as a junior with 83, and most team points earned at 141 ½.
The United States Air Force Academy was the next place Tom set his sights, wrestling from 1986-1989 and once again, making his mark on the mat wherever he went. A 4 year varsity letter winner, 4 year Western Athletic Conference place winner (4th,3rd,2nd,1st), Conference champion and NCAA Div-1 Championship Qualifier. Second team All Conference (junior year), First team All Conference (senior year). Team Captain during his senior year.
Tom is a 4-time All American in Greco-Roman wrestling as 4-time US Open Nationals place winner (8th,7th,7th,3rd). 1992 US Olympic Trials qualifier, 1994 US World Team Trials place winner (6th) in Greco-Roman. US Armed Forces Championship medalist in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman (3 bronxe, 2 silver), 3 time European Forces champion (2 in Greco-Roman, 1 in Freestyle).
Tom is currently the head wrestling coach for the Lakeview School district where he has held this position for the last 10 years. Tom and his wife Joette have 4 children Joshua, Zachary, Mitchell and Autumn and make their home in Stoneboro.
Keith MillerKeith Miller was a stellar athlete at Hickory High School in football and wrestling who went on to an outstanding career as a coach at Lakeview High School.
Keith graduated from Hickory High School in 1970. In football, he was an all-conference center as a junior and captain and all-conference tackle his senior season for the Hornets. But it was wrestling where he really shined. A three-year letterman, he was team captain his final two years. After winning a section title as a junior, he came back his senior year to win section, district and regional titles before losing in the PIAA state heavyweight finals by the thinnest of margins, an overtime referee’s decision.
Keith went on to Clarion University, where he wrestled for four years and played football for one season. After graduating from Clarion, he became a teacher and wrestling coach at Lakeview High School. He coached 11 years, the last nine as head coach. His record at Lakeview was a superb 124-32-4. Team highlights include: District 10 AA Championship (1985); two Section 3-AA crowns (1984-1985); undefeated season, 15-0 (1984);three French Creek Valley Conference titles (1983, ’84,’85).
Keith was named Section 3-AA Coach of the Year three times and was recognized by District 10 wrestling for 100 victories. He coached 21 section champions, two district champions, two regional champions, five state qualifiers, one state champion and one runner-up.
He also coached in the football program for 12 years at Lakeview, one season as co-head coach (1994). He coached elementary and junior high basketball for 5 seasons, posting a 47-7 overall mark.
Keith served as a baseball coach in the Lakeview Knothole league for 15 years, mentoring at all levels from T-ball through American Legion. He was vice president of the league for eight years, and also served as a PIAA wrestling official for 16 years.
Keith devoted _ years of his life to teaching 6th grade students and mentoring students and athletes in and around the Lakeview School District. The father of 2 sons, Nathaniel and Zachariah, and grandfather to Brielle and Clark, Keith and his wife Rosalyn make their home in Stoneboro.
1983-1984 Varsity Wrestling Team
Lakeview High wrestling team notched its first undefeated season and laid claim to the title as “King of Mercer County mats”. The end of the season turned out to be a match between league champions. Lakeview won the French Creek Valley Conference crown, while arch rival Reynolds won the Mercer County League title. The Sailors of Coach Keith Miller grabbed their 30th straight victory over a two-year span by edging Reynolds, 23-20, at the home of the Raiders. It was the first victory over Reynolds in eight years of coaching for Miller.
The 83’-84’ Varsity team recorded a variety of outstanding achievements. First undefeated season 15-0, winning streak has reached 30 straight wins, most wins in Mercer County for the sixth straight year- 15 wins, District 10 Section III Champions, French Creek Valley Conference Champions, Most section champs in one year with 6, Four- year team record for seniors- 63-8-1, 100th Career win for Coach Miller, Team record for reversals in a season- Bruce Findley at 36, Team record for escapes in a season- Rod Wright at 19, Team record for three-point nearfalls in a season- Tom Tingley with 29, School record for most wins as a Freshman – Rod Wright at 31, School record for most wins as a Junior- Tom Tingley with 83, Finished the season ranked as the #3 dual meet team in the state. Qualified four wrestlers for the Regional Wrestling Tournament and qualified two wrestlers for the State Wrestling Tournament which is the most ever.
