    Greg Slatcoff
    Greg Slatcoff was a track and field icon for more than 24 years here at Lakeview High School. During the early years 1976-1990 the Lady Sailor track and field teams compiled an impressive 104 wins, 21 losses and 1 tie. Team highlights included 3 district X Championships (1980, 1981, 1982), 2 district runner-ups in 1979 and 1985, 8 Mercer County Championships (1979-1984, 1988, 1989), 36 dual meet winning streak from 1979-1983.
    During the same time period, Coach Slatcoff was fortunate to coach 2 State Champions. Mercer County Hall of Famer Virginia Wilson in the discus , 1982, and Brenda Bindas in the high jump in 1990.
    In the years 2004-2011 Coach Slatcoff compiled a dual meet record of 65 wins and 14 losses, won 4 straight Region 1 Championships (2005-2008). Continued with a streak of 33 straight dual meet wins from 2005-2008, and coached Fawn Miller, a two-time PIAA Stae Champion in the javelin in 2006 and 2007. Fawn set the state record in that event in 2006 which still holds today.
    During his years as the girls track coach he was most proud of the fact that they sent 23 relay teams to the State track meet in Shippensburg, PA, of which 7 teams medaled.
    Coach Slatcoff was instrumental in the development of multi-school meets in the early days with his development of the Admirals Club Invitational. His first year as meet organizer and director resulted in 7 teams with 63 girls competing. In his final year as organizer Lakeview hosted 35 teams and nearly 600 girls competing.
    Greg was instrumental in bringing the Hershey Track & Field games to Lakeview in 1983 and was again meet coordinator and coach from 1983-1990 and again from 2004-2011. Several hundred young Lakeview athletes competed in this meet on the local, regional and state level.
    As a cross country coach, 1980-1985, Greg held 4 league championships, and 3 undefeated dual meet seasons. His teams placed 3rd in districts in 1982, 5th in 1985. In 1980 the boys team won the league championship and sent 3 individuals to the PIAA championship race.

    Gordy Opitz
    Gordy Opitz was one of the top all-around athletes ever produced at Lakeview High School. A 1975 graduate, Gordy earned 7 varsity letters in basketball, baseball and football. In basketball, Gordy was the Sailor team’s leading scorer both as a junior and senior while earning 2nd team and then 1st team All Mercer County. In 1975, he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player and was named to the Mercer County All-Star game. In baseball, Gordy was a three year letter winner. In 1975, he was the team’s leading hitter, batting over .450 and was named team MVP. During the summer, he played on four county championship baseball teams in Junior Legion, American Legion, and Senior American Legion. Gordy played football as a sophomore, before concentrating on other sports. He was awarded the Mark Perch “Outstanding Senior Athlete” award his final year.

    Gordy went on to an outstanding basketball and baseball career at Westminster College where he earned 7 letters. In 1979 as team captain, he led the team and District 18 in assists and steals. He was the single season all-time assist leader (201) and 4th in career assists (341). He was 3rd all-time single season steal leader with 74.

    A former assistant General Manager of the Savannah Braves, the AA farm team of the Atlanta Braves, and former assistant basketball coach at Mentor High School and Slippery Rock University, Gordy has remained involved with athletics. Gordy was inducted in to the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 2012.

    Virginia “Ginny” Wilson
    Virginia “Ginny” Wilson is a 1982 graduate of Lakeview High School and graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. During 1979-1982, Ginny competed in both basketball and track and field and was voted “Athlete of the Decade” of the 1980’s. In basketball, Ginny scored more than 1,000 points and had more than 1,000 rebounds while guiding the Lady Sailors to French Creek Valley Conference titles in 1980, 1981 and 1982. The team went on to win District 10 crowns in 1981 and 1982, and finished as state runner-up her senior season. In track and field, Ginny was second all-time in total points, winning 5 state medals which today remains a Lakeview record. A highlight during her senior year was when she won a gold medal at states in the discus, while also finishing 3rd place in the shot put. She finished third in both discus and shot put as a junior while taking 6th in the discus as a sophomore. Her high school track accomplishments include: school record holder in discus; member of the District 10 winning 400 relay team that holds school and D-10 records (50.0 seconds); the Lakeview girls’ track and field team won D-10 titles for three year with Ginny as the D-10 champion in discus for three years.

    At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Ginny was a three year starter in basketball and team captain during senior year. She still ranks in the top 20 for career assists and steals. In track & field, Ginny still holds the discus record (142’ 11”) and qualified for the national championships in 1984. Ginny was inducted into the Mercer County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

    Ginny Wilson is currently a physical education teacher at Manheim Township High School, Lancaster, PA, and has coached freshman girls’ basketball for most of her tenure and was head varsity softball coach for 15 years (1993-2007).

    Marti Heckman
    Marti Heckman was a tremendous basketball and track standout at Lakeview High School. A 1982 graduate, Marti lettered all four years and guided her basketball teams to an overall mark of 103 wins and only 15 losses. A highlight occurred in 1982, when the girls’ basketball team was state runner-up and tallied a 30-0 record after winning the western regional title.

    Marti’s teams qualified to the PIAA quarterfinals her freshman and sophomore years, while reaching the second round of the PIAA playoffs her junior season. Marti scored 1,543 career points, a school record that has lasted for more than 25 years. Her single-game high was 35 points. She also had 588 assists, 544 rebounds and 375 steals.

    In track and field, Marti set the school record in the 1600 (5:28) and medaled at the PIAA state meet as part of the 2 mile relay team in 1981.

    After high school graduation, Marti played point guard with the Ohio University basketball team from 1983-1986. Her senior year the team won the Midwestern Athletic Conference crown and was ranked 24th in the nation by USA Today. Marti was named All-MAC First-Team her senior year.

    In 2010, Marti was the 17th woman inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame, as well as inducted into the Ohio University Hall of Fame in 1993. Marti remains the all-time MAC and Ohio University career assist leader for both men and women with 810 and had the top three assists seasons with 194, 230 and 277.
