Fawn Miller
Fawn Miller is one of the most decorated, all-around female athletes to come through the Lakeview High School sports’ programs. She posted tremendous accomplishments in track at the high school and collegiate levels, as well as a 3 year letter winner in basketball and 2 years in volleyball.
In track, Fawn was a 4-time PIAA State qualifier earning 5 state medals. In her freshman year, she placed 8th overall in the javelin at the State Championships. In 2008, as a sophomore, she became the PIAA State Champion in Girls’ AA javelin, setting a state record and national sophomore record with a throw of 167’ 2”. Fawn went on to become the National Runner-up and competed at the USATF National Junior Olympics that year. Her junior year (2009), she held her State Championship title earning recognition as the Pennsylvania Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year. That year, she also competed at the State Tournament as part of the girls’ 4x100 meter relay placing 7th. Rounding out her high school career, Fawn finished as runner-up in the javelin her senior year..
From 2008-2023, Fawn held the Pennsylvania State javelin record and has the 10th farthest throw ever by a high school girl. She currently holds Lakeview's school record in the javelin and previously held the long jump record until 2023. She is listed as the 7th best in the 300 meter hurdles at Lakeview, as well as the 10th fastest sprinter and a member of the 4th fastest 4x100 meter relay. Fawn was inducted into the Pennsylvania High School Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2017.
Fawn qualified for the Olympic trials a total of 4 times. She was the youngest female javelin thrower to ever compete at the United States Olympic Trials as a sophomore in high school. She went on to make 3 USA track teams, was a 4-time NCAA All-American, and 2-time SEC Champion and SEC record holder in the girls’ javelin. One of her most glorifying moments came in 2014 when she became the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor National Champion.
Dave Hoye
Before graduating in 1963, Dave Hoye played basketball at Wilmington High School. He then went on to attend Slippery Rock University, where he participated in intramural football and basketball. Dave Hoye began his coaching career at Lakeview in 1967, a long career that included coaching boys’ basketball teams ranging from fifth grade to junior varsity, girls’ varsity basketball and then returning to coaching boys in 1999. Taking over the Lakeview High School Girls’ Basketball program in its infancy in 1975, Coach Hoye built it into one of the most respected programs in Western Pennsylvania. In his first year as head coach of the girls, his team tied for the Mercer County League Championship. During the next decade, the girls’ teams under his leadership won League Championships in 1976, 1980, 1981, and 1985 and District 10 titles in 1978, 1981, and 1982. His Lady Sailors were Western Pennsylvania finalists in 1978, 1979 and 1982 while being state runner-ups in 1982. Coach Hoye had a career record of 217-51 and a playoff mark of 33-13. He had five seasons with 20 plus wins and one year with 30 victories.
1982 Girls Basketball Team
During the 1981-1982 season, Head Coach Dave Hoye took his Lady Sailor’s team all the way to the state finals in Hershey, PA closing out a historic season. His team finished with 30 overall wins with their only loss coming in the state finals to Pine Grove. They were crowned French Creek Valley League Champions, District 10 Champions, Western Regional Champions and State Runner-ups.
Dave Hoye along with his Assistant Coach Jack Cress, both members of the Mercer County Hall of Fame, led the Lady Sailors to the PIAA State Championship in 1982 as the first sports’ team in Lakeview School history to compete for a State Title. Currently, they are the only team in school history to play for a State Championship. They hold the school record for most victories in a single season at 30 total wins. Seniors, Marti Heckman, Molly Kepner and Ginny Wilson have since been inducted into the Lakeview Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Mercer County Hall of Fame.
The 1981-1982 Varsity team included: Seniors - Marti Heckman, Ginny Wilson, Molly Kepner and Karen Clayton; Juniors - Tammy Johnston, Heather McCallister, Mindy Kimes, Carol Anderson, Robin Persch and Robin Umstead; Sophomores - Lonna Heckman, Robin Urey & Shaun Campbell; Freshmen - Karen Urey, Wendi Armstrong, Lisa Whitehouse, Lisa Johnston, Amy Ewing, Wendy Richardson and Teresa Palicia; Manager & Statisticians - Marie James, Laura James, Julie Philson, Michelle McChesney, Dotty Beckman, Sheila Buckley, Michelle Kern, Tammy Slater and Paula Johnston.
